Be there for your children

Our young ones need us in their lives, especially when they try to make head or tail of their future.

UNFORTUNATELY, everyone seems to be so busy that they do not take them seriously and encourage them on what they want to be. We were all born to serve a purpose. However, it seems human beings have classified some of these purposes as low grade.

There are some talents that are considered lowly that parents actively dissuade their children from pursuing them.

This has caused some youth to shy away from their areas of interest.

It would be impossible for a parent who is a doctor to give in to their child’s request to become an author.

They are expected to be like their parents — worse, if they are good in school.

FGK Life Issues recently held a writing competition about the current coronavirus pandemic, of which the contestants were aged between 13 and 35.

This was done to disabuse the notion that there are vocations that can be considered to be of low grade.

The awards ceremony was held on December 12, 2020.

Children should feel free to talk about the career paths they intend to pursue.

They should be supported right from the beginning.

Doctor Kudzai Vere, who was the guest of honour, said the writing competition should be an international programme since it captures issues of global concern.

We have children who are gifted in many areas but they need us to actively encourage them.

We cannot all be doctors or soccer players, but in our diverse talents, we make this world a better place.

Parents and institutions need to be pillars of support.

Talents and gifts can be nurtured. We need to build confidence in our children. We must encourage and help them to become better in their chosen fields.

According to Tom Krause, “Your purpose in life is to use your gifts and talents to help other people. Your journey in life teaches you to do that.”

This column seeks to build confidence and hope to humanity through responding to those mind-boggling life situations that the world has chosen to be quiet about.

The issue of gifts or careers that are considered lowly is one that the world has chosen to ignore.

Children are afraid to show what is within them if it has been rated low grade by the world.

Think about it, will God place anything of low grade within us or even our children? I don’t think so.

Every area of interest is equally important. Some careers that are looked down upon provide services that are required in our day-to-day lives — think of makeup, photography, documentaries and all.

We must never look down upon anything that our children enjoy doing, but let us join them and make what they believe in become a possibility.

A great lesson was drawn from tennis player Serena Williams, who remarked: “I have grown most not from victories but setbacks. If winning is God’s reward, then losing is how he teaches.”

It means no matter what area you are gifted in, never lose hope and faith because of failure for you will be actually learning.
