THE Mayor of Masvingo, Advocate Collen Maboke, has called on corporates to donate generously to help the needy in the community as part of their social development initiatives.

He said it was important for the local authority and businesses to pull in one direction in addressing teething challenges in the ancient city.

Adv Maboke was speaking during the launch of the 2018 Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund where a total of $7 000 was raised in cash and kind.

“This is one of the crucial events for me as the newly elected mayor. I want to applaud those who managed to make this day a great success by committing various resources including money and groceries among others,” he said.

“This is just a launch of the event. The door is still open for those who still want to assist the less privileged in our community. We have orphanages, the Capota School of the Blind, the ZimCare-Ratidzo School, the elderly, child-headed families and the disabled people who look forward our collective assistance. It is the duty of Masvingo residents to assist them through the traditional Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund.

“As a local authority we will continue to find ways to assist the needy and empower our residents. My fellow brothers and sisters, you should know that there is more joy in giving than in receiving. Your generous gifts to the needy will obviously make an impact in their lives. It is therefore my humble request to all stakeholders in Masvingo City to assist the less privileged members of the society.”

Among those who donated to the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund was N. Richards Group of Companies which provided groceries worth $5 500.

The Town Clerk, Mr Adolf Gusha, said: “Your donations will certainly be put to good use. We have auditors here to ensure transparency and accountability. Our doors remain open to those who would want to walk with us as we put smiles on the faces of the needy this festive season.”
