Makaza eyes qualification
ZIMBABWEAN athlete Collen Makaza is ready for the Cape Town Marathon on Sunday.
The marathon serves as a qualifier for the 2022 World Championships in the United States.
Makaza left for South Africa yesterday together with his teammates -Winfred Chitiro, Jonathan Chinyoka, Wellington Marevi, Munyaradzi Jari, Ethel Sibanda and Triphina Pilkada.
“We are ready as a team, it was too long since we last raced especially for us guys.
“For the girls at least the recently participated in Soar Ladies marathon in South Africa,” he told H metro sport yesterday.
Going into the race, Makaza said their primary target is to qualify for the World Championships as a team.
“The mission is simple, I want to win so is the other guys so that we try to qualify for the World Championships in America next year.
“We are also expecting tough competition because the defending champion of the marathon Steven Koka will be part of it, also this time around the Kenyans, Ethopians are coming because it the major opportunity to make it to the World Championships.”
Other than Makaza and his Mr Price team, there are also other Zimbabweans like Ngonidzashe Ncube, Isaac Mpofu Nice Misheck Sithole who are racing for Nedbank athletics club.
Makaza applauded National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe for helping to make sure that their trip is a success.
“I was to thank the association for helping us with all the required paperwork, also other sponsors behind the scenes who are funding for our flight tickets and other necessary expenses,” he said.
