Zimuto High School water woes eased
ZIMUTO Old Students Action Group, led by medical practitioner Dr Johannes Marisa, has commissioned a borehole pump to ease water problems at the school.
The Dutch Reformed Church in Zimbabwe run school, which was reportedly on the brink of closing early during the third term owing to water problems, got the help at a time learners’ health was at risk.
Speaking to H-Metro, Dr Marisa, who is the chairperson of Zimuto Old Students Action Group, said they mobilised funds after learning of the learners’ plight.
“As former students, we have always been in touch with our teachers at the school and we were touched when we learnt that they were facing water problems.
“At one point, we heard that they were about to close earlier since they had no source of water and with the current situation we are in, it’s really unhealthy for our learners to be facing water problems,” he said.
Dr Marisa hailed one of the longest serving teachers, Taurai Magunda, who first raised the appeal to former students.
“One of the teachers called Mr Magunda, who was there when we left the school in 1997, presented this problem to us.
“We then realised that there was need for us to chip in and assist the school authorities in the best way we could.
“We are glad that Mr Magunda was present today as we commissioned the borehole pump that will go a long way in easing water problems,” he added.
In another interview, Magunda, who teaches History and Shona, said:
“What our former students have done for us is simply unbelievable to say the least.
“When we appealed for help, we never thought the help would come that quickly.
“Our former students have led by example and we urge others who passed through our doors to emulate them.”
Dr Marisa, who runs Westview Clinics in Harare and the Medical and Dental Private Practitioners Zimbabwe Association (MDPPZA), is a former Zimuto High School student.
