MUBATIRAPAMWE Trust recently donated groceries to less-privileged Bulawayo children whose parents abandoned them for South Africa and Botswana in search of greener pastures.

During the donations held in Hillside and Nketa 9, the visiting team was shocked by the children’s plight.

Speaking at the event, Mubatirapamwe Trust executive director, Kiri Madamombe, hailed volunteers who are taking care of the children.

After the donation, H-Metro learnt through Madamombe that there are 109 children and 39 families who are now beneficiaries.

One of the volunteers, Lizinia Magumbo (39) was praised for the role she is playing.

“Firstly, I would like to thank the family of Dr Suroor Abassi, who bought all these donations for these children.

“Secondly, thank you so much to Mubatirapamwe Trust for driving all the way with these groceries to us from Harare.

“My landlord, the only mother of these three minors, just went away more than three years ago living these children alone.

“At first, I used to cross the border to South Africa and coming back, but she just vanished in South Africa,” she said.

Magumbo said she decided to stay home with the children after they were abandoned.

“I then said let me just not go away and just stay here with these children until she comes back or until they grow up.

“There is nothing I can say, but to just say thank you so much, siyabonga Dr Suroor Abassi,” she said.

On their school needs, she said the biggest challenge was with fees as she could only pay in instalments.

She is also worried about their medication when they get ill.

In another interview, Madamombe said they were appealing for help to ensure they conduct their online lessons during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Addressing guests at the same event, Mubatirapamwe Trust’s treasurer and former Gramma Records and ZMC boss Alex Murombo was touched by the plight of children.

“This place doesn’t belong to them, they basically sneaked in here due to desperation.

“We are told the owner of this place is based in South Africa and hardly comes here, but chances are that they can be chased away from here whenever he is back and roam the streets.

“Imagine the husband is in remand prison pending trial for a sexual offence and chances are that if he is be bailed out or discharged, the future of this family will be in smoke.”

At Nketa 9 Library, Mubatirapamwe Trust donated to a fourth year undergraduate who failed to finish his law degree after his father vanished in South Africa.
