Central Region sports scribes elect executive
SPORTS writers in the Central Region, which covers the Midlands and Matabeleland South provinces, have selected an interim executive under the Sports Journalists Association of Zimbabwe (Spojaz) banner.
The eight-member steering committee is led by Star FM’s Midlands correspondent Obert Sithole and has been mandated to draft a constitution that will pave way for elections to usher in a new executive by April 2017.
Other members of the steering committee are deputy chairperson Mdu Masiya, Chronicle Sport correspondent Lovemore Zigara (secretary) YaFM’s Wesley Weston (treasurer), while Munyaradzi Musiiwa (Sunday News), Norman Dururu ( Gweru Times), Mukudzei Chingwere ( NewsDay) and Givemore Makonye (New Ziana) complete the committee.
Sithole said the scribes had decided to form the Central Region chapter to promote and maintain a high professional standards for sport reporting.
“We have realised that as sports journalists from the central region we have been left out in some important activities because we didn’t have a body representing our interests. Once we come up with a substantive committee in April, we will push for the establishment of a national committee so that we have coordinated sports journalists across the country,” said Sithole.
The move by sports scribes in the Central Region comes as sports journalists in the Southern Region, which covers Bulawayo and Matabeleland North provinces, elected a substantive Spojaz executive, while those in the Northern Region are in the process of setting up a similar body. — @lavuzigara1
