LUMWANA BANS CAMPAIGNS IN MINE TOWNSHIP
LUMWANA Mining Company (LMC) will not allow the display of political party campaign posters and wearing of party regaliain any section of the business and mining township.
In addition, the mining firm in North-Western Province would not allow distribution of flyers, or any political promotional materials within the premises.
According to a memorandum addressed to employees and business partners, no political
materials would be allowed to be displayed or distributed within the mining lease, the mine township and on all transportation associated with the business both LMC and business partners even off site.
The directive came from
LMC General Manager Paul Gilliot.
"Furthermore, LMC will not allow individuals to wear party regalia while in company PPE or hold meetings in the workplace or mine township," Mr Gilliot said.
Mr Gilliot stated that the measures would foster both LMC neutrality and individual freedoms of association.
He however encouraged employees and business partners to participate in the campaigns and meetings outside the mining license areas.
Mr Gilliot said the company appreciated that employees and business partners in their individual capacities have a constitutional right to participate in the electoral process and to elect leaders of their choice.
"As a company, we will encourage individual freedoms of association and support every individual's right to participate in this democratic process. However, Lumwana mine business will remain independent and neutral of the political process," he stated.
