Mufulira poised for major agro project
A MULTI-NATIONAL organisation is considering to embark on agriculture projects in Mufulira as a way of easing poverty and joblessness in the mining town.
Apollo Fintech director, Wessel Sevenster, said his organisation would concentrate on agriculture and other areas in the informal sector to reduce unemployment and poverty levels.
"One of the areas we will look at is agriculture and others which can contribute effectively to ending poverty," Mr Sevenster said.
Mr Sevenster said his team would meet the District Commissioner, Mr Mike
Manda, residents and other stakeholders to establish what was needed to fight poverty in Mufulira,
He was speaking after he donated 19, 000 facemasks to the Mufulira Municipal Council yesterday.
Mr Sevenster said his organisation would not just look at fighting the pandemic but also look at effects of the pandemic such as joblessness and poverty in various communities.
"Yes, we have donated about 19, 000 facemasks to help in fighting the deadly Covid-19.
But the task ahead also is to deal with effects of Covid-19 such as joblessness and poverty. The pandemic has worsened poverty levels in various communities, this is why we want to contribute towards fighting poverty,” he said.
He said the organisation would also visit other parts of the country to find ways of ending poverty and empowering people in various communities.
"In trying to find out what can be done to alleviate poverty, we will be visiting various communities not only in Mufulira, but other parts of Zambia" he added.
And Mufulira Mayor, Gift Mushinge, said the fact that some foreigners wanted to engage Zambians in fighting poverty, was a clear indication that Government had created a conductive environment for investment.
Mr Mushinge urged residents to work closely with the investors who mean well.
