UNCOLLECTED HEAPS OF GARBAGE AT TOWN CENTRE MARKET

-

Dear Editor,

LUSAKA City Council has not collected garbage which has accumulated at Town Centre Market near the police post and the public toilets. There are two containers in which garbage is thrown at this site quite allright but the garbage has accumulated without being collected.

Some street kids are seen scavenging this area as early as 07:00 hours picking some items. When I enquired from some traders to get first hand information as to why garbage had accumulated so much without being collected, they could not give concrete answers. The traders are worried that the heaps of uncollected garbage can lead to an outbreak of diseases such as cholera.

However, the councillor George Daka is not doing anything about the problem of uncollected heaps of garbage at this site.

Mr. Daka was elected by the people to deliver development and address issues such as the prevailing heaps of uncollected garbage.

Truth be told; Lusaka as the capital city should be clean, green and show a healthy environment. It is like Mr. Daka, the souncillor is in a slumber and he should wake up.

He should ensure that these heaps of uncollected garbage are collected. The quicker the garbage is cleared the better.

In case Mr Daka has forgotten, the cholera epidemic which broke out in October 2017 claimed many lives across the country and the government spent a lot of money to treat the patients.

I feel the Central Business District should be kept clean by ensuring that garbage is collected in good time. This is because it is the main trading area.

ELEMIYA PHIRI, Lusaka.
