Thieving Matero traffic police officers

-

Dear Editor

IN 2012, Colonel Panji Kaunda, then Deputy Minister, Transport and Communication, caught red-handed traffic police officers receiving bribes at an illegal roadblock on Great East Road.

However, when the case came up in court, the State lacked enough evidence and the officers walked to freedom with money in their pockets.

It was easy to guess what could have transpired because arresting officers were fellow cops ad could not send their colleagues to prison

Motorists in Lusaka will agree with me that these illegal roadblocks are a common sight on our roads, especially targeting taxi and mini-bus drivers as well as truck drivers as these seem to have ready cash to roll out.

I am not surprised that Lusaka Province Minister Bowman Lusambo caught these men on Mungwi Road getting bribes in broad daylight. I will not be surprised that these men will also be free should they go to court because there will be no witness, complainant and lack of evidence.

It is also alleged that these men mount these roadblocks with blessings from the senior officers who get a cut from the proceedings. To kill a snake one has to hit the head, and so to eradicate this vice, heads must roll at the summit of the traffic section, otherwise, we shall continue singing the same song of corruption, corruption.

‘IRATE MOTORIST.’
