Lusaka to standstill for ‘commando’ mayor?

- By NATION REPORTER

PF Intercity commander, Francis Muchemwa has promised to bring Lusaka city to a standstill today as he goes to file in his application to contest the Lusaka mayor by-elections at the Patriotic Front (PF) district offices near Millennium Bus station.

Mr Muchemwa joins 22 others interested in contesting on the PF ticket that include businessman, Kumbukilani Phiri, councilor Christopher Shakafuswa, and Brian Hapunda.

Mr Muchemwa confidently promised that all business men and women in the Central Business District, bus drivers and many supporters would escort him as he goes to file his papers.

According to the PF member, business would literally come to a halt as no trader would want to miss a glimpse of such a joyous and historical moment to see one of them vie for the coveted seat.

“Bus drivers, market traders are all coming to support me because they want a grassroots person to head the city,” Mr Muchemwa told the Daily Nation in an interview.

Unlike others who submitted their applications quietly, Mr Muchemwa says his supporters want to escort him and that means all buses in town would head to the PF district offices.

Earlier, Mr Muchemwa popularly known as Commando said that Lusaka needed effective social and economic transforma- tion which would result in job creation and poverty reduction especially among women and the youth.

Mr Muchemwa, who is aspiring to contest on the PF ticket in the forthcoming Mayoral by-election, said only youthful leadership with fresh ideas could achieve to effectively transform the socio-economic status of the city of Lusaka.
