Somerton High School unveils new marquee as it wraps up its rst year
The marquee was donated by Avenir Financial
As it approaches the end of its inaugural year, Somerton High School has unveiled a brand-new marquee, courtesy of Avenir Financial.
Situated off of Jefferson Street, the digital marquee allows community members to be kept in the Toro loop, as Somerton High School Principal Lucky Arvizo noted at the ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 25.
“We started having conversations about a year ago, and Avenir Financial wanted to be a part of the Somerton High School community and see how they can contribute to our students,” Arvizo told the Yuma Sun. “Opening a new high school, you have time to build your traditions and identity, and bringing the community into the school through contributions or partnerships is of extreme importance. And hopefully it continues as we grow as a school.”
Miriam Limon, Senior Director of Marketing for Avenir Financial, also commented on how the project came about.
“We’re here doing a ribbon-cutting to celebrate the new marquee here at Somerton High School. Avenir Financial made a donation to make the sign happen, and it’s beautiful,” Limon said at the event, noting
that Yuma Signmasters created the marquee.
“Avenir Financial has been a part of Yuma County for over 80 years, and we’ve been the only financial institution in Somerton for over 30 years. So, we have a special place in our heart for the Somerton community, and now that the high school has been built, this is the perfect way for us to leave a lasting impact,” she
added.
With the school opening its doors for the first time in August 2023, this development signals another milestone and comes a few months after it dedicated a new flagpole donated by the Cocopah Indian Tribe. As it nears the end of its first year, the school still has other exciting projects in the works, including a competition gym.
