Forecast leads Yuma Sun to early deadline

Weather info, late-breaking news will still be posted to YumaSun.com

-

When the rain falls in Yuma County, it can pack quite a punch. This storm system has been no exception.

Sunday’s storm left quite a mess throughout the county, taking out trees, awnings and trampolines all over the place.

We’ve had power outages, leaking buildings, flooded roadways and more, and that was just on Sunday.

Monday afternoon, as the Yuma Sun team watched Rosa’s expected trajectory into our area, we made an unusual decision, and decided to go to press a little sooner than usual.

Our press usually starts somewhere between 11:30 p.m. and midnight each night.

From what we could see on the radar and in the weather forecast, that time frame was expected to be right about the time the weather here could get intense. The Weather Channel’s forecast called for 100 percent chance of rain and squalls at 11 p.m., while the radar prediction showed Yuma smack dab in the center of a brightly colored storm cell.

The National Weather Service put Yuma County on a flash flood watch through late tonight, and as of Monday afternoon, the agency predicted heavy rain and wind gusts for the area Monday night.

Sunday’s storm left Yuma County reeling, knocking out power all over the place, and Monday night was expected to be worse. If the newspaper loses power right at deadline, there is a chance we wouldn’t be able to run the presses, so we decided to be proactive, and print early.

That means some information might be missing from today’s paper. Lottery results, for example, don’t move until later at night, so those will be in the Wednesday edition of the Yuma Sun. Some scores and information from sporting events might not wrap up in time either.

Any late-breaking news that moved too late for deadline will be posted on YumaSun.com, and we’ll print those late stories in Wednesday’s paper as well.

Yuma, we appreciate your readership. And until this storm passes out there, please, stay safe!
