Thumbs up, down from the Yuma Sun

- DAVID BUSTER

• Thumbs up to the Fort Yuma Rotary Club, which built a new playground for students at O.C. Johnson Elementary School!

• Thumbs up to the companies that are bringing jobs to Yuma or expanding operations, which in turned landed Yuma on among the top 25 cities in the U.S. adding the most jobs. That’s great news for Yumans!

• Thumbs up to the agricultural workers at Sabor Farms who were recognized by the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office for helping the victims of a fatal car accident on Dec. 14. Their compassion and heroism are exceptional!

• Thumbs up to the Yuma schools for the results on the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality lead testing. A few minor concerns were found, but the schools in question took quick action to resolve those issues, ensuring our students have safe drinking water.

• Thumbs up to Somerton, which recently inaugurated its new park honoring veterans and the 158th Regimental Combat Team “Bushmasters!”

• Thumbs up to Housing America, which is working on a curbing blight in Somerton, while at the same time putting people in homes.

• And on a related note, thumbs up to Southwest Oncology Centers, which plans on renovating the former KYMA studio, and to Nickolas and Nadia Ramos, who plan on revitalizing three vacant homes on 5th Avenue. It’s great to see a future ahead for these properties.

• Thumbs up to the new businesses coming to Avenue 3E, including Yuma’s first Sheraton Hotel and the Savor Fresh Country Store.

• Thumbs up to the Yuma Sun Sports team for their great coverage Dec. 17 of former local high school athletes and how they’ve fared at collegiate sports!

• Thumbs down to the reports of meth-spiked soda in Mexicali. That’s a scary situation, and one authorities need to resolve before someone is seriously hurt.

Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down are compiled by the Yuma Sun editorial board, based on recent events, happenings and activities around Yuma County and the nation, and will appear on Fridays in the Yuma Sun.

DO YOU AGREE WITH THIS OR NOT?

I enjoyed the column on annoying words and phrases. Would like to make the following nominations:

• “Win-Win” — Often trotted out with enthusiasm when one person is trying to convince another to agree to a one sided deal.

• “Giving back” — Why must altruism be tied to this phrase? Can’t a gift just be an unmerited gift?

• “Same difference” — Are two things the same or different?

• “Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year” — Singling out “New Year” is redundant.

• “Surreal” — Overused. If everything is surreal, then nothing is.

• “I see what you’re saying” — Do you see spoken words or hear what someone says?

• “I wouldn’t do that if I were you” — But, I would do that; therefore, if you were me, you would do it too. On the other hand, if I were you, knowing your inclination not to do it, then I would not do it either.

• “The list goes on and on” — good place for me to stop.
