Gray outpitches deGrom, leads Yankees over Mets

NEW YORK — Sonny Gray outpitched Jacob deGrom, Jacoby Ellsbury and Gary Sanchez homered, and the New York Yankees held off the Mets 5-4 Tuesday night to sweep both Subway Series games in the Bronx.

Despite another late stumble by closer Aroldis Chapman, the Yankees kept the Empire State Building lit up in pinstripes with the win. The Mets will try to change the color scheme to their shading when the rivalry now shifts to Citi Field for two games beginning Wednesday night.

Gray (7-7) earned his first win in three starts since being traded from Oakland to a playoff contender. He blanked the Mets on four singles until the seventh inning, when he issued a leadoff walk and rookie Dominic Smith followed with his first major league homer.

Making his Yankee Stadium debut for his new team, Gray left to a nice ovation as reliever Tommy Kahnle was summoned.

Lions condemn ‘any use’ of logo at Charlottesville event

ALLEN PARK, Mich. — The Detroit Lions say they “detest and disavow” any use of their logo associated with the event last Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia.

A photo attributed to Getty Images showed someone with a logo similar to the one the Lions use , although it was blue and red and had stars on it.

“We detest and disavow any use or implied use of the Detroit Lions logo or any of our marks in association with the event this past Saturday in Charlottesville,” the team said in a statement Tuesday night.

“We value diversity as it represents the strong fabric of our team, the City of Detroit, the NFL, the game of football, our fans and our country.”

The Detroit Red Wings already said they were considering legal action regarding the use of their logo during the demonstration.

Violence broke out Saturday in Charlottesville after a loosely connected mix of white nationalists, neo-Nazis and other far-right extremists assembled to protest the decision to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

Spangenberg’s 4 RBIs lift Padres past Phillies 8-4

SAN DIEGO — Corey Spangenberg homered and had a careerhigh four RBIs and Dinelson Lamet threw seven strong innings as the San Diego Padres beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-4 on Tuesday night.

Spangenberg hit his career-high 12th homer, his third in four games. He also had a two-run double in the first and an RBI on a fielder’s choice in the fifth.

Lamet (7-4), a rookie righthander with a power arm, held the Phillies hitless over the first 4 2/3 innings in winning for the fourth time in his last five starts. He tied a career-high by working seven innings, surrendering two runs, three hits, a walk and a hit batter. He struck out seven.

A Philadelphia batter didn’t reach base until Maikel Franco was hit by a pitch to open the fifth, which preceded Jorge Alfaro’s first homer in the majors in cutting the Padres’ lead to 4-2.

That would be the closest Philadelphia would get in dropping its fifth of its last six games.

Carter Capps and Kyle McGrath worked the final two innings for the Padres as they clinched their first series win in August.

Rhys Hoskins, who was called up on Thursday, hit his third homer in two days, a two-run shot in the ninth. Cesar Hernandez had two of the Phillies’ six hits.

The Padres tacked on four unearned runs in the fifth, taking advantage of Franco booting Wil Myers’ easy grounder at third.

PHOENIX — A trip that saw the Houston Astros drop six of the first seven games ended on a muchneeded positive note for the AL West leaders.

The Astros had six extrabase hits in the first four innings, building a big enough lead to hold off the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-4 on Tuesday.

The Astros managed only four hits over the last five innings, but one was Max Stassi’s solo home run in the ninth.

“We’ve had a rough week and a rough road trip, and it’s nice to end it with a win and get home and get back to sort of how we’re playing,” Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. “We’ve led the league in offense in a lot of different categories, so I think today we looked a little bit more like ourselves.”

The Astros had scored just five runs in their previous three games, one of those a shutout loss to the Diamondbacks and ace Zack Greinke on Monday.

But Houston jumped to an 8-0 lead in the fourth inning Tuesday.

Despite the quick start on offense, starting pitcher Brad Peacock couldn’t get out of the bottom of the
