16th Street and 4th Avenue

Work to widen and improve the 16th Street and 4th Avenue intersection is underway. One lane of through traffic will remain open in each direction. Right turn restrictions remain in place for large trucks and semitrailers. Access the Yuma Mesa Shopping Center via northbound 4th Avenue or eastbound 16th Street; left turns in and out of the center will be prohibited from this point forward.

The city asks all motorists to plan ahead and obey the reduced speed limit. Those using residential streets as detour routes are asked to respect the 25 mph speed limit and be attentive for children and pets. While business access will be maintained at all times, those seeking through traffic routes may wish to avoid the construction zone, using roads such as 24th Street, 8th Street, or 32nd Street for eastwest through traffic, and Arizona Avenue, Avenue A, Pacific Avenue, or Avenue B for north-south through traffic.

Interstate 8 and Giss Parkway — ADOT

An Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) project to improve the interchange area of westbound Interstate 8 and Giss Parkway is scheduled to begin in March, and will take approximately seven months to complete. The $1.8 million project will consist of the construction of a two-lane roundabout at the interchange to accommodate commercial trucks and other large vehicles. Work will also improve drainage, intersection lighting, signage and lane striping. Additionally, “Share the Road” signs will be installed to make accommodations for cyclists. Access to businesses near the work zone will be maintained during construction. Closures of the I-8 westbound ramps are to be expected while work is underway. Drivers will be asked to use alternate routes, including the 16th Street exit. The speed limit in the work zone will be reduced. Drivers should watch for construction personnel and equipment, and obey all posted speed limits and signs.

1st Avenue, 24th-26th streets

Crews will begin a project to relocate a waterline along 1st Avenue and Madison Avenue, between 24th and 26th streets. Additionally, they will be replacing pavement along 1st Avenue and replacing four sewer manholes in that area. Work is scheduled to be complete by July 4.

18th Street, 4th-6th avenues

Drivers will not be permitted to use the nearby alleyways that are located between 4th and 5th avenues and between 5th and 6th avenues as a detour.

Magnolia Avenue, 3rd Street to Colorado Street

A partial closure along Magnolia Avenue will be needed for shoulder work along the roadway from 3rd Street to Colorado Street, and then east to 9th Avenue, as crews access a manhole to pull a fiber cable through an existing conduit. Work is to be completed by May 26. Traffic control signs will be posted in the work zones as crews move throughout the area. Additionally, there will be no parking permitted along some sidewalks near the work zone while crews are in the area.

Highway 95, Avenue 2E-7E

There will be a lane closure along 16th Street/Highway 95 for Arizona Public Service (APS) to do power pole inspections between Avenue 2E and 7E, during which time they will have a moving bucket truck set up in the area. Work is expected to take place Monday through March 31. Signs will be posted near the work zone to alert approaching traffic of the lane closure and shifts in traffic flow.

Araby Road, I-8 waterline relocation

A project to relocate a waterline on Araby Road near its intersection with Interstate-8 will begin Monday and finish in June. More details regarding changes to traffic in the area will be released when they become available.

8th Street, Castle Dome to Pacific Avenue

8th Street is closed between Castle Dome and Pacific Avenue. Pacific Avenue is closed to through traffic north of 12th Street, and closed to all traffic north of 8th Street. Roadway, water and sewer work is being done in conjunction with the Pacific Avenue Athletic Complex. Detour by using 12th Street between Pacific and Castle Dome Avenue. The project is anticipated to be complete in late summer.

Avenue 3E/U.S. 95

A nine-month project to widen and improve both U.S. 95 and Avenue 3E is currently underway. Drivers are asked to be aware that no left turns are permitted at Highway 95, though left and right turns onto Highway 95 from northbound Avenue 3E are permitted. The north section of Avenue 3E at the intersection is closed to traffic.

The $3.2 million project will widen both roads to five lanes and to include a turn lane. Work will take place on Avenue 3E from north of the Interstate 8 interchange to past the U.S. 95 intersection, as well as on U.S. 95 from about 500 feet west of the Avenue 3E intersection to just past the Araby Road intersection. Both roads are expected to remain open with lane restrictions in place while the project is underway. Drivers are asked to find alternate routes to avoid potential delays. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will maintain access to businesses in the work zone and keep both roadways open during construction. The project is scheduled to be completed by August.

1st Avenue, 13th-14th streets

A project to relocate existing facilities for the city’s Fleet Maintenance project will require lane closures, shoulder work and additional traffic control on 1st Avenue, near the area of 13th through 14th streets. Kennedy Lane, Arizona Avenue

Crews will be working along the portion of 20th Street between Arizona Avenue and Kennedy Lane to pull fiber through an existing conduit and for underground bore work. The work will lead to a lane shift along 20th Street in the area. The project is expected to be finished by the end of March. There will be no parking permitted along 20th Street between Arizona Avenue and Kennedy Lane while the project is underway. Traffic traveling in either direction on 20th Street is to keep to the right.

U.S. 95 at Fortuna Wash — ADOT

Work is underway on the bridge on U.S. Highway 95 spanning Fortuna Wash northeast of Yuma and is expected to be completed by next winter. The bridge is going in at milepost 34, approximately 12 miles northeast of Yuma and 10 miles south of the turnoff (Imperial Dam Road) to Yuma Proving Ground. Crews are scheduled to work weekdays between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. Motorists should allow extra travel time as lane restrictions will be in place and flaggers will occasionally need to alternate traffic through the work zone.

Arizona Avenue, 24th Street

In order to do valve maintenance near the intersection of Arizona Avenue and 24th Street, there will be partial road closures on both of those roadways near their intersection with each other. The lane closures will be in effect between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. Signs will be posted to alert traffic to the reduced 25 mph speed limit and lane closures. Additionally, 20th Street will be closed between Arizona Avenue and Walnut Avenue to all traffic for a portion of the project. The project is expected to be finished by mid-May.

I-8 west of 4th Avenue — Caltrans (updated)

Caltrans crews continue to work on the reconstruction of Interstate 8 in Imperial County, west of Yuma, to extend the life expectancy of the pavement from State Route 111 to the border with Arizona. Associated lane closures and detours may cause significant delays. Signage will be posted alerting motorists of the work and associated detours. The segment of work closest to Yuma is located west of SR-186 to the state line where Arizona meets California.

Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction from the agricultural checkpoint in California to the state line with Arizona.
