DVF's Debut

-

Lady Liberty's godmother is making her debut at DragCon.

This September, DragCon will return to New York City, where queens such as Aquaria, Asia O'Hara, Jiggy Caliente, Kim Chi, Miss Fame, Violet Chachki and TV personality Michelle Visage will take over the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. The threeday convention, which kicks off on Sept. 6, will feature vendors, exhibitors and talks, including one between RuPaul and none other than Diane von Furstenberg.

"Diane von Furstenberg and RuPaul are a perfect pairing of true pioneers who defied all odds to build brands and careers that have endured for decades," said Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey, DragCon's cofounders, in a joint statement. "Designer, activist and philanthropist DVF recently served as godmother to the Statue of Liberty, raising funds for a new museum at the base of the statue. There are several theories about who was the model for the statue, and one suggests it was the sculptor's brother, which would make Lady Liberty a drag queen. The one thing that Lady Liberty, DVF and RuPaul all have in common is that they stand for the power of love and the acceptance of all people, no matter how diverse. Let freedom reign."

On Sept. 7 at 4 p.m., RuPaul will sit down with von Furstenberg to chat about life, fashion and how she became godmother to the Statue of Liberty. The pair will also speak about von Furstenberg's role in the HBO documentary "Liberty: Mother of Exiles."

As drag continues to enter mainstream consciousness, DragCon is becoming a destination for fashion and beauty insiders. Drag artist

“Betye Saar is one of the most significant artists working today, and one who boldly addresses issues of race, gender and spirituality,” said LACMA chief executive officer and Wallis Annenberg director Michael Govan in a statement.

“Born in Los Angeles and having sustained a career over seven decades here, Saar has only begun to receive the international acclaim her work deserves. LACMA has exhibited her work since 1972. This fall, we are thrilled to present ‘Betye Saar: Call and Response,' an exhibition that will reveal the artist's sketchbooks, an important part of her creative process that has never before been shown publicly, and their relation to her finished works.”

Mexican director Cuarón is a four-time Academy Award winner known for such genre-spanning films as the road comedy “Y Tu Mamá También” (2003), J.K. Rowling fantasy “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” (2003), and sci-fi thriller “Gravity” (2013). Most recently, Cuarón's family drama “Roma” (2018) received two Oscars, for directing and cinematography. The film also won the award in the Best Foreign Language category.

“Cuarón tells beautiful and stirring stories of humanity and how we relate to one another,” said Govan. “Earlier this year LACMA exhibited stills from ‘Roma' that not only highlighted Cuarón's incredible skill in pictorial composition, but also connected deeply and personally to so many museum visitors.”

Proceeds from the annual Art+Film Gala help underwrite LACMA's initiative to enhance film programming, while also funding the museum's exhibitions, acquisitions, and educational programming exploring the intersection of art and film.

Govan added, “This gala is a moment to honor the achievements of the moving image and to celebrate the strengthened dialogue between art and film in Los Angeles. This creative exchange will continue to grow stronger in the coming years with the opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and LACMA's theater in its new building for the permanent collection.”

Originally slated for late this year next door to LACMA, the Academy Museum opening has been postponed until an unspecified date in 2020. — BOOTH MOORE worn by the protagonists during the heist; and the Italian antifascist song “Bella ciao” played multiple times in emblematic scenes as a metaphor of resistance and freedom.
