Napoleon Gold Medal Duals boost Wapak wrestlers stats
NAPOLEON - The Wapak wrestlers travelled to Napoleon High School last weekend to take on the always challenging field at the Napoleon Gold Medal Duals. The grapplers wrestled nine dual matches during the two day competition.
The Redskins finished the weekend with a 5-4 record by defeating Defiance 60-15, St. Francis De Sales of Toledo 63-8, Bucyrus 62-18, Fairview 69-11, and Huron 69-6. Wapak dropped decisions against Genoa Area 39-32, Napoleon 41-27, Perkins 43-32, and Versailles 47-21. Three home town wrestlers finished undefeated. Antwain Adams (138) and Corbin Mitchell (157) both compiled 7-0 records. Adams collected two pins and two major decisions, while Mitchell chalked up four pins and a technical fall. Mitchell’s record improves to 28-2 with 24 pins, and Adams climbed to 25-3 with nine pins. Nate Buell won all six matches he wrestled with three pins. His season is now 15-4 with nine pins.
Wyatt Buell (150) and junior Jace Knous (190) came through the weekend with only one loss apiece. Buell earned five pins, a technical fall and a major decision to account for his 7-1 mark. He now has a 21-5 record including 13 pins. Knous was one of three Redskins with six pins plus a technical fall and a major decision during his 8-1 run through his nine competitors, to improve to 21-6 including 12 pins.
Reece Schnarre (165) tied for the team lead in pins with six for the two days, and finished with a 7-2 mark that upped his season stats to 19-4 with 13 pins. Freshman Gavin Ridenour (132), lost his first two matches, won his next six in a row, including three pins and two major decisions.
The final Redskin with a winning record was another freshman, Caden Mellott, who
won four matches and lost two, while pinning two opponents, and recording two technical falls to see his win total jump to 18 against four losses on the year, and his pin total improve to 11.
Also contributing to Wapakoneta’s cause was Jarrett Mullen (4-5) and two pins, Andrew Mosler (3-4) and two pins, Dalton Huebner (3-4) three pins, Kegan Zink (2-6) with a pin, and Carter Shaner (1-6) with a pin.
The Redskins get back into
Western Buckeye League action on Thursday when they will host Kenton at the Wapak gym to try and improve on their 4-1 league mark that ties them with Celina for second place, trailing undefeated St. Marys Memorial (5-0) who holds the top spot. Thursday will see the Rough Riders take on Shawnee (2-3) at home, Ottawa-glandorf (2-3) will travel to Van Wert (1-3), and Celina (4-1) will be at Bath (1-3), while Defiance (2-3) rounds out the schedule with a trip to Elida (2-3).
