Wapakoneta bounces back after first loss
Wapakoneta baseball looked to avoid a
second straight loss as they hosted a tough 7-1 Lima Central Catholic Thunderbird team. The Redskins were
just able to squeak out a 4-3 win as a ground ball hit to the shortstop in the bottom of the seventh was
missed and Alex Lewis was able to score on a walk-off error.
The Wapakoneta defense was able to overcome some mistakes
in the field after a Wednesday night game where the mistakes infield led to too
many runs for the Redskin bats to make
up for, leading to the first loss of the year for Wapakoneta. In this game, they made
mistakes but were able to hold the Thunderbirds to minimal runs.
Wapakoneta had two errors in the game as well as missed
some opportunities trying to catch and field to get needed outs. This was most
evident in the sixth as the Redskins recorded
two errors but only allowed two runs to
score as the Wapakoneta pitcher was able to get two more outs to get out of the inning. After the win, Redskin manager Jason Brandt mentioned his team’s mistakes, “tonight we were playing really good until the sixth inning,” said
Brandt. “Our guys didn’t give up, they didn’t have quit in them and especially
after last night, we talked about that ‘you
have to be ready to play, LCC is a fantastic team, they did a lot of things well.”
On the mound to start for the Redskins was Grant Jolly, he would go six innings, allowing one run, two
more scored on errors. The Thunderbirds also got on base thanks to
five hits and a walk while Jolly was throwing, he would also sit down eight batters on
strikes. Ryan Camper would make his season debut on the mound in the seventh as he gets credited with the win on a nohit one walk inning where he recorded on
K. “Grant Jolly really came out and pounded the zone for us, a lot better than his last
outing, that’s a big key for us,” said Brandt.
The Redskins may not have had a huge night hitting the ball but they made contact at timely spots, putting up just enough to conquer the Thunderbirds. Wapakoneta finished with five hits, two from Zach Rogers,
one from Kaden Siefring, Landon Brandt and a double from
Braeden Goulet. Goulet would finish the game with two RBI
and Brandt also had an RBI.
While the walk-off comes off an error it
still took a Ryan Camper knock-in play
to force the mistake, Jason Brandt spoke
about Camper’s performance following the game, “I can’t say
enough about Camp coming in there in the
seventh, he through the second-most innings for us last year and that was his first
inning of the year, he came in a did a great
job, we got to give him a lot of credit for that.” Adding, “he puts the
bat on the ball and that’s all you can ask for, put a ball in play
and let them dictate what happens.”
Wapakoneta picks up another win, now at 8-1-1 on the year, The Redskins will now travel to Shawnee today for a WBL match. The Thunderbirds fall to 7-2 with the loss.
