April 30, 2023, 3:00 pm, Marsh House, 308 N. Main St., La Fayette, GA 30728 Call to order by David Boyle, President. Minutes of last meeting were approved.
BUSINESS MEETING
Treasurer’s Report by Jennie Chandler: $3351.67. There was a $60 deposit.
OLD BUSINESS
David Boyle reported on the very successful DAR event at the Marsh House on March 16 when a memorial celebration and planting of a pink dogwood was held for Marge Craig. She was very active in the preservation of the Marsh House.
NEW BUSINESS
Stacey Suttle invited members to a special event at the First Baptist Church for a gospel concert on June 25, 3:00 pm, in La Fayette. It will be a fund-raising event for the African American Memorial Park on Villanow Street, La Fayette. Stacey gave an update on the AA museum where the murals on the exterior north and west walls are almost complete.
David Boyle announced that the Marsh House will be open for tours during the
Honeybee Festival on Saturday, June 3, 2023, 10-3:00.
The May 21, 2023 meeting of the WCHs will be a “mystery tour” of an 1880 home in Walker County. Members will meet at 3:00 pm at the Marsh House to carpool to the site. The date was changed to the third Sunday to avoid Memorial Day weekend.
Copies of the WCHS Newsletter were distributed, Jan.-April 2023.
PROGRAM
Wright’s Mineral Springs Resort on Highway 136 west of La Fayette.
Chair of the Preservation Commission, John Culpepper, gave a summary of current information. There was quite a historical journey (1912-1927) for a 518 acre resort named “Mineral Springs Resort” at Catlett Gap, GA, developed by the Honorable Paul Dl Wright and son, Stewart Wright. Documents and photos from those days through the 1950s were shared. One photo was the Dancing Pavilion.
The Walker County Historic Preservation Commission plans to erect a historical marker when sufficient information has been collected.
