Valley City Hi-Liner Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball had their season openers this week, with the boys taking on Fargo Oak Grove and the girls facing Fargo Davies. The Hi-Liner boys were in Fargo, starting the game by matching the Grovers’ fast pace. With the baskets falling in their favor, Valley City propelled themselves to a 23-15 lead in the first 8 minutes of the game. Oak Grove answered with a 16-7 run of their own in the second quarter, with Fargo’s Connor Asche scoring 18 of his 22 points in the first half. At halftime, the score was a tight 31-30, Oak Grove.

Just like the first half, Hi-Liners hit the court running. The boys capitalized on offensive looks to go on a 9-3 run and pulling ahead 3934. The Grovers came alive in the second part of the half, as they had in the games earlier minutes. The offense ran away from Valley City and grabbed the lead again, 44- 41 as the fourth quarter commenced. Hi-Liner Jared Eggermont and Aiden Jacobson scored 7 points in a quick run to take the lead again, but the Grovers brought strong defense as the clock ticked down, and Valley City struggled to overcome the pressure.

Thanks to a steal with a three- point finish for the Grovers and their high free-throw percentage in the last quarter, Fargo came away with the win, final score 72- 64.

Hi-Liner Peyton Zaun racked up 15 points, followed by Jared Eggermont’s 11. Valley City Boys’ Basketball heads to Fargo to face Fargo Davies next Tuesday.

The next night, Valley City Hi-Liner Girls’ Basketball faced Fargo Davies at the HI-Liner Activity Center in their own season opener. Unlike the Hi-Liner boys’ start against Fargo, the Valley City girls struggled both offensively and defensively at the beginning of the game, as they did throughout. The Davies quickly put up 20 points to Valley City’s one, and Fargo continued their dominance through the game’s entirety. Big three- point shots put Fargo Davies further ahead, and they outrebounded Valley City. When the final buzzer sounded, Fargo Davies added the second win to their season, 76-51. Both Brooke Eggermont and Jadyn Dieterle scored in the double- digits and grabbed multiple rebounds for the Hi-Liners.

The Hi-Liner girls’ next game is at Grand Forks Central on Friday, December 18.
