Following the thrilling debut of Katy Perry’s return single “Never Really Over” this year, the singer shared her second new song of 2019, “Small Talk.”

And she has another winner on her hands, with the new song – co-written by Charlie Puth – proving that “Never Really Over” wasn’t a fluke and that Perry is in the middle of a fruitful creative stretch that’s resulting in some of the best music of her career.

Previously, the 34-year-old teased the release by sharing the song’s lyrics on her Instagram, posting several images of sticky notes printed with “From the Desk of Katy Perry,” each featuring a few lines of text accompanied by the #SmallTalk hashtag.

“Isn’t it weird / That you’ve seen me naked / We had conversations about forever / Now it’s about the weather okay,” the first note read. A second read, “Isn’t it wild / That I know your weakness / And everybody at the party thinks / That you’re the best since sliced bread.”

“I just can’t believe / We went from strangers to lovers to / Strangers in a lifetime,” a third note read.

Recently, Perry landed in the news for a less celebratory reason, with a judge ordering her, as well as her collaborators and record label, to pay the writers of Marcus Gray’s 2009 song “Joyful Noise” a $2.78 million sum for allegedly stealing elements of the track for Perry’s 2013 hit “Dark Horse.”

A jury found that certain beats in “Dark Horse” were improperly copied from “Joyful Noise,” and ruled Perry should pay $550,000, while her Capitol Records label be held responsible for the majority.
