Leaf to remain incarcerated

Texas, Mont. dealing with probation issue

GREAT FALLS, Mont. — Ryan Leaf will stay in the Cascade County regional jail for a maximum of 30 days while probation officials in Great Falls and Randall County, Texas, continue trying to revoke a suspended sentence in Texas.

Dawn Handa, regional administrator of the Great Falls Probation and Parole Office of the Montana Department of Corrections, said the 30-day hold was a procedural order that gives authorities the time they need to send information between states.

Leaf, a former NFL quarterback, was arrested early Monday morning for the second time in less than three days on drug and burglary charges, which led probation and parole officials in Great Falls to place him on a 72-hour hold. That hold was extended Tuesday.

Leaf’s probation is out of Randall County, but the Great Falls office entered into an agreement with Texas officials to supervise Leaf after he moved back to Great Falls. Handa said that offenders being supervised by two states can be held without bail for longer than 72 hours, but for no longer than 30 days. This means a hearing on Leaf’s probation status originally scheduled for Wednesday will not happen, Handa said.

Leaf was arrested Friday after a month-long investigation by the Central Montana Drug Task Force into suspicious cash-ondemand packages he allegedly received from a post office box address in Florida. A subsequent search of Leaf’s residence and pickup turned up several illegal prescription pills and an empty prescription bottle belonging to an acquaintance of Leaf’s who said his medication was stolen from his home, court documents state.

Flacco the best? We knew Joe Flacco’s camp thought highly of him when his agent said in February that he was one of the NFL’S top five passers.

It turns out the Baltimore Ravens quarterback thinks he’s even better.

“I assume everybody thinks they’re a top-five quarterback,” Flacco told WNST 1570 in Baltimore. “I don’t think I’m top five. I think I’m the best.

“I don’t think I’d be very successful at my job if I didn’t feel that way.”

The February comments made by agent Joe Linta were spurred by a discussion of Flacco’s rookie contract, which expires after this season.

Flacco says he wants to be treated like one of the league’s best and he wants a deal done soon.

“It’s not about the money. It’s about what you feel you deserve,” said Flacco, who has yet to win a Super Bowl in four seasons as a starter. “At the end of the day, they’ll take care of it, and I’ll be waiting.”

Luck vs. Griffin?:

The NFL released its preseason schedule Wednesday, and if things go as expected and quarterbacks Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III are selected 1-2, they could face each other in the third week of the preseason when the Indianapolis Colts play at the Washington Redskins.

It’s still not solidified whether the Colts will select Luck or Griffin, with Luck being the likely top pick, especially after Griffin turned down a private workout with the Colts, opting to let his pro-day performance stand on its own.

Philly’s newest Bell:

The Philadelphia Eagles found a replacement for injured left tackle Jason Peters, signing former Buffalo Bills lineman Demetress Bell to a five-year deal.

The move was made necessary when Peters ruptured his right Achilles tendon last week while training in Texas.
