Temple topples Duke

Wyatt scores 22 in upset of No. 3

Khalif Wyatt scored 22 points, and Rahlir Hollis-jefferson had 17 to help Temple knock off No. 3 Duke 78-73 on Wednesday night in Philadelph­ia.

Using tough man-to-man defense that limited Duke’s long-range shots, the Owls (10-3) grabbed the lead midway through the first half and never let it go.

When the Blue Devils (12-2) crept within three in the waning minutes, Wyatt hit consecutiv­e three-pointers for a 66-57 lead.

The Owls had lost nine in a row to Duke. “Every time we needed a stop, it seemed like we got one,” Wyatt said. “We kept getting big stops and big rebounds.”

Mason Plumlee had 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Blue Devils.

No. 9 Georgetown 73, No. 20 Marquette 70: Jason Clark scored 26 points, and Hollis Thompson’s tiebreakin­g three-pointer with less than 30 seconds left capped a comeback from a 17-point deficit, helping the host Hoyas (13-1, 3-0 Big East) win their 11th in a row.

Marquette (12-3, 1-1) lost for the third time in five games despite 18 points from Darius Johnson-odom.

No. 1 Syracuse 87, Providence 73: Brandon Triche had 16 points, hitting three consecutiv­e three-pointers early in the second half, to help the visiting Orange (16-0, 3-0 Big East) pull away from the Friars (11-5, 0-3).

No. 15 Kansas 67, No. 22 Kansas State 49: Thomas Robinson had 15 points and 14 rebounds, leading the host Jayhawks (11-3, 1-0 Big 12) to their 43rd win in the last 46 meetings with their state rival. Rodney Mcgruder had 15 points for Kansas State (11-2, 0-1).

No. 18 Murray State 76, Eastern Kentucky 67: Donte Poole scored 22 points, and Isaiah Canaan added 16 as the host Racers (15-0, 3-0 Ohio Valley) moved within a win of the school’s all-time best start set in 1935-36.

Record tied:

Towson equaled a men’s Division I record with its 34th consecutiv­e loss, a 60-27 defeat at Drexel that also set a record for fewest points by a team in a Colonial Athletic Associatio­n game.

The Tigers (0-15) would pass the mark first set by Sacramento State from 1997 to 1999 if they lose Saturday at Old Dominion.

Women’s games

No. 1 Baylor 90, Missouri 46: Odyssey Sims had 22 points and Brittney Griner 14 points and nine blocks for the host Lady Bears in the Big 12 opener for both teams. Baylor’s 14-0 start is a school record.

No. 2 Connecticu­t 79, West Virginia 60: Bria Harley had 18 points as the Huskies (12-1, 2-0 Big East) extended their Ncaa-record home winning streak to 93 games.

No. 3 Notre Dame 74, Seton Hall 36: Skylar Diggins scored 14 to pace the host Irish (14-1, 2-0 Big East) to their 11th win in a row.

Kansas State 71, No. 8 Texas A&M 69: In a Big 12 opener with eight lead changes and 14 ties, Mariah White lifted the host Wildcats (10-3) past the defending national champ on a runner with 1.6 seconds left in overtime. Brittany Chambers had 21 points for K-state. Tyra White scored 17 for the Aggies (9-3).

No. 17 Texas Tech 58, Oklahoma State 53: Kierra Mallard had 19 points and 11 rebounds to help the host Lady Raiders move to 13-0 in the Big 12 opener for both teams.

Kansas 72, No. 25 Texas 67: Angel Goodrich had 22 points as the visiting Jayhawks (12-1) won their Big 12 opener for the first time in six years. Ashleigh Fontenette scored 19 for Texas (10-3, 0-1).
