The San Diego Padres have turned to a rising young candidate over a veteran manager to lead the franchise in 2020.
Jayce Tingler, who served as the Texas Rangers’ field coordinator in 2019, was hired as the Padres’ next manager, the Padres announced this week.
Tingler, 38, has mostly spent time in the Rangers’ front office in player development and worked two years as an assistant general manager in that organization.
He is managing Escogido in the Dominican winter league.
Padres general manager A.J. Preller was the Rangers’ assistant GM during Tingler’s tenure in Texas.
“Jayce has extensive experience in virtually every aspect of coaching, player development and baseball operations, and our entire group believes that he’s the right person to lead our talented roster,” Preller said in a statment, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.
“His multifaceted skill set, combined with his ability to develop talent and help players reach their potential at the major league level, were key factors in his selection as our manager.
“We are excited for Jayce to build upon the foundation we’ve laid in San Diego as we set our sights on October baseball.”
Veteran coach Ron Washington, who served as the Rangers’ manager from 2007 to 2014, was also a finalist for the managerial position.
The Padres, who committed $527 million the last three seasons on Manny Machado, Eric Hosmer and Wil Myers, have regressed and played poorly the second half of the season the past season.
They fired Andy Green with only eight games remaining. During his four-year tenure, the Padres had never finished better than fourth place in the National League West.
