State discontinues financial support for summer work program
Forrest City will no longer receive state funding to support a summer work program for area youth.
According to a press release from city hall, the summer program will not be available locally this year due to changes in funding support from the state.
This decision comes as a result of the Arkansas Department of Human Services discontinuing its financial support for the Delta Plus Youth Opportunity Network summer work-based learning grant through the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, according to city officials.
The program offered summer employment to students in St. Francis, Lee and Monroe counties.
"We want to emphasize the immense value of the work you and your teams have contributed to your communities, particularly in engaging and empowering your youth through meaningful work-based learning," Clevon Young, executive director of the Delta Plus Youth Opportunity Network wrote in a letter to program directors.
In the letter, Young internal changes within ADHS and differences in priorities between ADHS and the previous funding authority, the Arkansas Division of Workforce Services, as the reasons behind the discontinuation of financial support. He also expressed regret for the late notice and any inconvenience caused by the decision.
“While the City of Forrest City cannot continue funding the program at this time, it remains committed to supporting initiatives aimed at youth development and community enrichment,” Mayor Larry Bryant said in the press release. “The city hopes to explore future opportunities for collaboration and partnerships as it navigates this evolving landscape together.”
