Simeon Harris commits to Colorado

Bethel transfer had originally agreed to play at Fresno State, now he’s headed to Colorado

Simeon Harris knows a little about changing schools, having transferred last year from Jesse Bethel High to Benicia in the spring. This month the highly recruited football star and defensive back switched his future college choice as well.

Although Harris had given a verbal agreement to attend and play football at Fresno State, the soon-to-be senior decided to nix those plans and instead make a verbal agreement to attend the University of Colorado on

Wednesday. Harris was given the offer on June 25 by the Pac-12 school.

Colorado went 4-2 last season in a COVID-affected season, eventually losing to Texas 55-23 in the Alamo Bowl.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to play in a Power Five conference,” Harris said on Thursday. “I was at a camp in Colorado for two days and when it ended the coaches met with me and asked if I’d like to go to school there. It’s been a dream for me and the opportunity was on the table. I had to take it.”

Harris said the Colorado coaches liked his “competitiveness, and man coverage as a defensive back.” Despite the love being given from Colorado, the Benicia senior said it was a “very difficult decision” to let Fresno State he wouldn’t be going there.

“It was difficult because I have a good relationship with Fresno State and I have all my love and respect to that program and its coaches,” Harris said.

After meeting with Colorado coaches Harris toured the campus and liked what he saw.

“It’s beautiful out there especially with all the mountains,” Harris said. “I talked a lot with my parents and my coach from (KT Prep) 7-on-7’s, Devin Nunes. We talked a lot about opportunities and how the ball was in my court.”

Harris has been offered by Colorado State, as well as Air Force and Utah State. As a sophomore at Bethel he was second-team, allTri-County Athletic League and first team on the TimesHerald’s All-Area team as a sophomore in 2019. He had

eight interceptions. On the 247 website, Harris is the 107th ranked athlete in California. He is a three-star recruit.

Now that he has his college of choice picked, he’s looking to make a few more picks for Benicia High this fall. Benicia is slated to begin its season on Aug. 27 at home against Pinole Valley.

Benicia also has a matchup against Harris’

former team, Bethel, on Sept. 24. Harris transferred from Bethel after inaction from the Vallejo City Unified School District involving sports. Bethel eventually played just one game while Benicia (3-2) played five regular season games and one exhibition.

“I’m very excited for this year because we have a lot of talent on this team,” Harris said. “With guys like Croix

Stewart, Janari (Boone) and Miles (Bailey) there is a lot of talent there and we’re hoping for a serious run at a section championship. It will be nice to get a full season with this team.”

Stewart has a verbal commitment to UCLA and Bailey has a verbal to Fresno State.
