City Council to discuss North Mare Island security

- By Katy St. Clair kstclair@timesheraldonline.com

The Vallejo City Council will be meeting on Tuesday evening to discuss security on North Mare Island and extending the hours that cannabis retailers are permitted to be open for walkin business.

The city has signed a partnership with the Nimitz Group to develop the northern part of Mare Island for offices, warehouses and light industry.

When construction begins, a “lay down area” for materials, equipment and supplies will be created and it will need round-the-clock security. In addition to that, security will also be used to prevent illegal dumping by people who have heretofore used the island as their garbage disposal.

According to the city’s staff report on the issue, Vallejo will lease the area from Nimitz for $1 a month and in exchange, Nimitz will provide security and cover some taxes.

Cannabis retail is on the “action calendar” on Tuesday night. As the law currently stands, retailers are allowed to be open to walkin customers from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. The City Manager is proposing that the hours increase in keeping with state law, which allows shops to be open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

This move is intended to mitigate losses retailers have faced from the effects of COVID-19 on the sales economy, which will in turn increase the amount of taxes that the city can collect.

Tuesday’s meeting begins with a closed session at 3:30 p.m. and then a regular session beginning at 7 p.m.

The meetings are held via Zoom and constituents and other interested parties can find the link on the city’s website at cityofvallejo.net.
