Hazel Green girls defeat Huffman, wins seventh-straight title

BIRMINGHAM — For the secondstra­ight season, Hazel Green girls basketball defeated Huffman to claim the girls Class 6A AHSAA state title.

The Lady Trojans defeated the Lady Vikings 57-38 on Saturday at Legacy Arena. It marks Hazel Green's seventhstr­aight state title and eighth in program history.

Hazel Green held Huffman without a field goal for the entire first quarter, building a 12-0 lead. It was not until the 6:35 mark of the second quarter that Huffman got on the board. By halftime, the Lady Trojans led 27-7 and were shooting 45% (9-of-20) from the field compared to that of the Lady Vikings, which were shooting 15% (3-of-20).

Hazel Green led by as much as 21 points to close the third quarter. Huffman managed to cut the deficit to 13 in the final quarter behind four 3-pointers from Jamiria Jones and one by Tamiria Jones, but it was never able to get any closer to the lead as Hazel Green went onto claim victory.

The Lady Trojans finished the game shooting 45.5% (20-of-44) from the field, while the Lady Vikings finished shooting 27.3% (12-of-44).

Hazel Green's Leah Brooks and Kriste Johnson each scored a team-high 13 points, with Brooks adding 10 rebounds, six of them being defensive. Tamiria Jones led Huffman with 15 points, while Jamiria Jones added 14 points in the loss.
