Mercer County Hoops HoF to award George O’Gorman scholarship
Mercer County lost a true legend when George O’Gorman passed away in July.
For over 40 years at The Trentonian, O’Gorman was a beacon shedding light on high school athletes of every sport.
His dedication to the area and its athletes was second to none and the professional way he handled every task made him a household name if you were involved in high school athletics in any capacity.
The Mercer County Basketball Hall of Fame, under the guidance of Gary Bushelli, the former Hightstown Athletic Director, will initiate the George O’Gorman Memorial Scholarship.
The scholarship will be awarded on April 7 when the second class of the Mercer County Basketball Hall of Fame is inducted at Mercer Oaks, beginning at 3 p.m.
The second class of inductees will be announced this week.
One of the highlights of the first class, along with a great group of inductees is that the class included O’Gorman and that he was able to experience such a great honor.
To be considered a player should possess leadership, sportsmanship, perseverance, community involvement and a sense of commitment.
Over the years, O’Gorman would always be the big games, but what made him a giant in high school journalism was there was never a game that was too insignificant.
He possessed the virtue’s that the Hall of Fame committee is looking for in the scholarship winner.
The committee would like to thank Bill Rednor and the administration at WBCB radio for donating air time get the information about the scholarship on the many games the station covers in Mercer County.
Anyone who would like to donate to the scholarship fund can submit a taxdeductible donation to the George O’Gorman Scholarship Fund, c/o Mercer County Basketball Hall of Fame. The address to send the donation is 13 Clearwater Dr., Allentown, NJ 08501.
