Prior to the 2017-18 season, the Trenton Catholic Academy girls basketball team got two key additions, both of whom proved crucial to the Mikes’ success.

Bob Fusik, who also runs the school’s CYO program, was asked to be TCA’s new girls basketball coach. Then Jada Queen transferred over from Trenton High.

Those two changes led to big things for the Mikes.

After going 13-10 in 201617, TCA returned to dominance locally, going 26-3 on the season, while winning the Burlington County Scholastic League’s Liberty Division and the Mercer County Tournament.

Along the way, Fusik got the Mikes playing solid defense again, limiting opponents to a county-best 34.3 points per game with their relentless pressure which helped them advance to the NJSIAA Non-Public B South final before losing in overtime to Rutgers Prep, 58-54.

For his hard work, Fusik is The Trentonian’s All-Area Coach of the Year.

The arrival of 5-foot11 senior forward Queen helped TCA also lead Mercer in scoring at 64.6 ppg.

Queen scored 13.1 ppg, plus proved equally tenacious on the boards and in the middle of the defense where she could lung forward to pick off passes. Combined with six-foot sophomore guard/forward Giana Boulden, Queen added a little extra kick to the Mikes’ attack, spurring the team on to be better each time it took the floor.

For her efforts, Queen is The Trentonian’s All-Area Player of the Year.

She is joined on the AllArea first team by Boulden, Pennington’s Carly Rice and Leah Johnson, Steinert’s Natalie Mehl, Ewing’s Mya Grimes and Allentown’s Ryan Weise.
