TOPEKA - Johnny Lee Sperling, 76, Topeka, Kansas, passed away Monday, April 15, 2024, of cancer.

Johnny was born in Leavenwort­h, Kansas on January 10, 1948, the son of Ronald and Irene Sperling. After serving in the United States Marine Corps, Johnny’s career was as a heating and air maintenanc­e technician. He was proud to have been Maintenanc­e Director for Newton Presbyteri­an Manor from 1977 to 1979 and was employed by Lower Heating and Air for more than 30 years.

Johnny loved fishing, which was surpassed by his love of golfing introduced to him by his brothers-in-law, Bill and Joe Kroll. He was very proud of his hole in one and several rounds under par.

On November 14, 1975, Johnny and Cathy Kroll were united in marriage, enjoying more than 48 years together. She survives at the home. Also surviving are Johnny’s brother, Jack (Dianna) of Arkansas; sisters, Linda Smith and Alberta Zawodny; stepbrothe­rs, Kerry and Charles Carter; sister-in-law, Jan Brier (Jack); brothers-in-law, Joseph and William Kroll (Natalia); and several nieces and nephews who were close to Johnny.

Following Johnny’s wishes, cremation will take place. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 24, at Most Pure Heart of Mary Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to Mass. Inurnment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Johnny’s family thanks Dr. Caracioni and staff at St. Francis Cancer Center for their heartfelt care.
