Only thing Serena Williams displayed was poor sportsmans­hip

It’s no secret that I’m always the biggest tennis fan in the sports department of every newspaper I’ve ever worked for.

So when the U.S. Open women’s final became front page news all over the world, it’s only natural that this would be my proudest moment.

It was truly embarrassi­ng all the hot takes coming from reputable publicatio­ns all over the country including The Washington Post.

In case you missed it, here is what happened to Serena Williams: First, she was illegally coached from the stands. Whether she saw it or not was not the issue. Her coach even admitted after the match that he was in fact coaching.

No matter what the so-called experts would have you believe this is called quite a bit in tennis and certainly a lot by umpire Carlos Ramos.

He even called it against older sister Venus in the 2016 French Open and despite Venus being as upset as you will ever see her, she eventually kept her composure.

OK, so the coaching thing happened and Serena Williams did lose her cool.

She though looked to be turning the match around in the second set, leading 3-1. Then her serve was broken and she destroyed her racquet.

Ramos had no choice but to dock her a point. Serena continued to struggle with Naomi Osaka’s power and composure and lost two more games.

Instead of focusing on the match, Serena’s response at the changeover: “I never got coaching. I explained that to you and for you to attack my character then something is wrong. You’re attacking my character. Yes you are. You owe me an apology. You will never, ever, ever be on another court of mine as long as you live. You are the liar. When are you going to give me my apology? You owe me an apology. Say it, say
