Vaccinations in 3-county area continue to rise

The number of vaccinations in three Southern California counties continued to rise, despite the pause in giving the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, data released Wednesday show.

In Riverside County, vaccinations of county residents went beyond 1.3 million, while San Bernardino County reported 606,672 residents receiving a vaccination. Los Angeles County has administered 5 million doses, with nearly 2 million residents fully vaccinated.

The pause was issued Tuesday by the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention in response to six reported out-ofstate cases of a severe blood clot in people receiving the onedose vaccine out of 6.8 million doses given in the United States. San Bernardino, Riverside and Los Angeles counties switched these appointments to the Pfizer and/or Moderna vaccine.

In L.A. County, of the 19,600 appointments for Johnson & Johnson vaccines, 14,000 have been replaced, said Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of the county’s Department of Public Health. The delay will begin to affect L.A. County’s mobile vaccination teams, which used this vaccine exclusively, she said.

Meanwhile, the number of virus cases in the three counties is holding steady. San Bernardino County reported the rate of new cases per day per 100,000 residents remained at 3.8%, matching Tuesday’s rate. Riverside County’s rate of new cases per day per 100,000 residents stayed steady at 3.6. However, that figure rose Tuesday from 3.5 last week. L.A. County’s rate is 3.2, a slight increase from 3.1 last week.

“We are definitely not declining any longer but we are holding steady,” Ferrer said.
