Victim of fatal rollover crash identified

Medical examiners identified the man killed in a rollover crash in front of Rio Vista Elementary School last week.

George Arturo Alcala, 36, was a Lancaster resident, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

The crash took place in the elementary school’s parking lot on Jan. 2, around 2 p.m., according to Los Angeles County Fire Department officials.

Alcala was killed when the Yamaha Rhino — considered a “side by side,” or a hybrid between an ATVs and a mini-SUV — he was riding in crashed, resulting in Alcala hitting the asphalt and sustaining a fatal injury.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies reported he was not wearing safety equipment, such as a helmet or seatbelt, in their report.

The death was caused by traumatic injuries sustained in a vehicle rollover crash, which has been ruled an accident, according to Assistant Chief Ed Winter of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Officer.

There were two occupants, one was immediately transported to the hospital, and the other was treated on scene for injuries for about 25 minutes.

Fire officials did not release any information on the identity or the severity of injuries for the vehicle’s other occupant, who was treated at the scene for injuries before being taken to the hospital.
