CalArts alumni to perform at Getty’s Friday Flights

Alumni from California Institute of the Arts will participate and perform in The Getty’s Friday Flights this Friday.

The Friday Flights is a series of interdisciplinary happenings each summer that bring together a range of Los Angeles-based artists to transform the Getty experience, according to The Getty’s website.

Artists involved in the series are asked to “respond to the Getty’s unique architecture, collections and exhibitions through music, performance, film and other creative interventions.”

This Friday, CalArts alumni and 2012 graduates Kenyatta A. C. Hinkle and Tyler Matthew Oyer will present Hinkle’s “Exploring the Nowannago: Kentrifican Modes of Resistance.”

The performance is meant to be a metaphor for how “residue of the past remains chained to today, impacting the treatment of bodies deemed ‘other,’” according to the Getty.

Hinkle is said to create tension in her piece with a double-noose tugof-war to explore a narrative from a geography called “Kentifrica.”

It will be performed for the first time with accompaniment from The Kevin Robinson Ensemble (KREation) — led by CalArts alumnus and 2014 graduate Kevin Robinson — and will draw attention to issues that include the Black Lives Matter Movement and immigration reform, among others.

The Friday Flight will also include a site-specific performance from Scott Benzel, a 2001 graduate and visiting CalArts faculty member.

Benzel, a Los Angeles-based visual artist, will present his performance of “Unauthorized Live Score” on the Getty’s Courtyard Stage.

According to the Getty, Benzel is known for his analytical and sounddriven work.
