Big second quarter pushes Glen Rose past J’ville

- ZACH PARKER

JESSIEVILLE — Jessieville’s seven points in the first quarter carried less weight than the 28 by Glen Rose in the second quarter Friday night.

After a quick score by the Lions, the Beavers scored 42 unanswered points, 28 in the second quarter, and romped 42-14 at Phillips Field.

Following a three-and-out possession by Glen Rose on its opening drive, Jessieville gained an early lead as Mason Bradshaw returned a punt 41 yards in the first two minutes of the game.

The Lions held their own defensively through the first quarter, but the Beavers found their groove early and often in the second. Glen Rose quarterback Jarred Rodgers found Ryan Taylor for a seven-yard score in the first four seconds, setting the tone.

Rodgers passed for three other scores in the second quarter as the Beavers went up 28-7 by halftime. The Lions struggled to find their rhythm offensively in the first half, totaling six yards on the ground and failing to reach the red zone.

A 33-yard touchdown run by Rodgers and a 58-yard scamper by Ryan Taylor extended the Glen Rose lead to 42-7 with 7:35 remaining in the third, enacting the mercy rule and running clock.

Jessieville set the final margin on Adam Saveall’s one-yard plunge with 8:15 left in the game.

Rodgers finished with 128 yards passing and 40 yards rushing while Jayshawn Cox paced the Beavers with 67 yards on the ground. Saveall completed seven of 20 pass attempts for 65 yards.

Both teams are on the road next week, Glen Rose (4-1, 2-0) at Bismarck and Jessieville (3-2, 1-1) at Haskell Harmony Grove.
