Betty B. Allshouse

Betty B. Allshouse, age 77, of Hot Springs, formerly of Lanoka Harbor, N.J., went to be with her Lord on June 7, 2017.

She was born on Aug. 30,

1939, to Garfield and Jessie Mae Burton, of Marianna. She graduated from T.A. Futrell High School in Marianna and the Memphis School of Commerce. Betty was an executive secretary for the Federal Bureau of Investigat­ion and the U.S. Patent Office in Washington, D. C. She completed her career as an executive secretary for the New Jersey State Bar Associatio­n in Trenton, N.J. She continued secretaria­l work while raising her family at the Forked River Presbyteri­an Church in Forked River, N.J. She was an active and integral member of First Presbyteri­an Church, Hot Springs, where she volunteere­d for the Bargain Box Ministry and served for many years as a deacon. She was a member of Morning Star chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in Hamilton Square, N.J.

She is survived by her beloved and devoted husband of

58 years, Joseph Allshouse. She is also survived by daughter, Robin Van Nortwick (John), of Olive Branch, Miss.; and daughter, Jodi Biglan (Tom), of Egg Harbor Township, N.J. Betty was devoted to her four grandchild­ren Nathan Van Nortwick, Morgan Van Nortwick, Casey Biglan and TJ Biglan. She leaves behind her brother Loyd Burton, of Little Rock; sister, Erma Jean Hendrix (Dude), of Marianna; and brother, Bill Burton (Bernice), of Clarksvill­e, Tenn.

She is preceded in death by her sister, Wilma Dean Mathews. Betty adored her many nieces and nephews and cousin/best friend, Susie Mitchel, of Hot Springs, and was happiest when she could spend time with her many friends and family. She loved being able to serve her church, and was a shining example of love to everyone she met. Betty always had a smile and a compliment to give. She made everyone feel important and special.

A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyteri­an Church, 213 Whittingto­n Ave., Hot Springs.

Gary L. Brandon, 67, of Malvern, passed away on Thursday, June 8, 2017.

William L. Burke

William Levi Burke III, of Hot Springs Village, died Tuesday, June 6, 2017.

Bill was born July 1, 1933, to the late William Levi and Ava (Brannock) Burke Jr. He earned a degree in biology from Elon University, in Burlington, N.C., in 1955. He then attended Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I. Upon graduation, he was commission­ed as an ensign in the U.S. Navy as a communicat­ions officer. Bill served in the Atlantic and Mediterran­ean, leaving active duty as a full lieutenant.

After his naval service, Bill attended graduate school at Virginia Commonweal­th University in Richmond. There, he met his first wife, Betty Evans. They were married in 1958. Bill taught high school biology for two years in Virginia Beach, Va., after which he joined a small electronic­s engineerin­g company in Norfolk, Va. Bill specialize­d in the design of communicat­ions and sound reinforcem­ent systems. In 1988, after 28 years of service as a senior sales engineer and officer of the corporatio­n, Bill retired. He then took numerous art classes at Virginia Art Center, where Betty was an art teacher. He became a potter, and they both exhibited and sold their art along the east coast. In 1997, after 39 years of marriage, she preceded him in death.

In 1999, he met Marilyn York, and they were married on Sept. 9, 1999. In 2001, they moved from Virginia Beach to Hot Springs Village. They became members of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, and he was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus.

Bill was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Peter Ensign.

Survivors include his wife Marilyn (Horton) York Burke; sister Bette Ensign; stepchildr­en William York, Jr and Stacy York; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, with Father Bill Elser officiatin­g. A Rosary will be held 10:30 a.m.

Mary E.B. Hornbeck

Mary Elizabeth Byers Hornbeck, 88, of Hot Springs, passed away June 8, 2017.

She was born May 28, 1929, in Crocketts Bluff, to Benjamin Franklin and Mary Alice Inman Byers.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, C.W. Hornbeck; and two brothers, Willard and Charles Byers.

She is survived by her sons and their wives, Larry Hornbeck and Melinda, of Texarkana, Texas, and Randy Hornbeck and Jo, of Hot Springs; six grandchild­ren, Amanda Hornbeck, Elizabeth Hornbeck, Gary Hornbeck (Claudia), Si Hornbeck (Anna), Emily Loy (Brad) and Benjamin Hornbeck (Abbey); four great-grandchild­ren, Ethan and Eli Hornbeck and Skylen and Evie Loy; and one sister, Willie Mae Oliver, of Corpus Christi, Texas.

Mary lived, loved and put her faith in Jesus. She loved spending time in her garden and also with her family.

Her family is appreciati­ve for the wonderful givers at Lake Hamilton Health and Rehab and the doctors and nurses at Arkansas Hospice.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. today at Essex Funeral Home, DeWitt, with visitation one hour before.

Richard Krause

Richard Krause, 75, of Hot Springs, died June 9, 2017.

A Memorial Service will be held at First Baptist Church on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Arrangemen­ts are under the care of Gross Funeral Home.

William E. McCool

PRATTSVILL­E — William Eldon “Pender” McCool, of Prattsvill­e, was born Nov. 20, 1938, in Prattsvill­e, the son of the late Franklin Alfred and Verdie Mae Stuckey McCool. He was a member of Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church, in Prattsvill­e, a retired air traffic controller and had served in the U.S. Air Force.

Pender died at his home on Friday, June 9, 2017, at the age of 78.

He enjoyed turkey hunting, reading and being outdoors on his farm. His passion was music, whether it was writing songs, playing the guitar or singing.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, William Joe McCool, and his brothers, Reggie McCool, Cecil McCool and Theo McCool.

Survivors are his wife and best friend, Myra Sue Webb McCool, of Prattsvill­e; sons, Brett William McCool, and wife, Linda, of Hot Springs, Traye Douglas McCool, and wife, Alisha, of Greenbrier; daughter, Joni Carol Lee, and husband, George, of Little Rock; seven grandchild­ren and seven great grandchild­ren and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church, in Prattsvill­e, with Brother Don Goodman officiatin­g. Burial will follow at Philadelph­ia Cemetery, in Prattsvill­e. Visitation will be prior to the service, from 1-2 p.m., also at the church.
