Texas Chrome keeps shining in Oklahoma

California Chrome is still a bigger name in horse racing, but Texas Chrome, a late blooming 3-year-old, is making a name for himself on the sport’s Midwest circuit.

Stakes placed at Oaklawn Park in April, the Grasshopper colt notched his third consecutive stakes victory Sunday in the Grade 3 $400,000 Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park. Darting inside when stuck between horses, Texas Chrome got up by a half-length over Stickstatelydude with favored Fish Trappe Road third.

C.J. McMahon is 3 for 3 aboard Texas Chrome since trainer J.R. Caldwell gave him the mount in August’s Super Derby Prelude, earning a fees-paid berth to the Grade III race at Louisiana Downs and winning it Sept. 10.

Texas Chrome, drawing the rail post in a field of 11, ran the mile and an eighth Sunday in 1:48.94. He paid $6.60, $3.60 and $2.60. The victory was Texas Chrome’s eighth in 13 starts, giving him career earnings of $842,462. Texan Danny Keene bought him for $10,000 at a sale in the owner’s home state.

In his only local start, Texas Chrome finished third in the Bachelor, a sprint stake won by the Steve Asmussen-trained Counterforce.
