Poyen decks CMS early, romps 48- 21

- ROD GARDNER

Poyen’s senior girls, behind tenacious man- to- man pressure, led by 25 points early and routed host Cutter Morning Star 48- 21 under the mercy rule Tuesday night at Eagle Fieldhouse.

The win improved the Lady Indians to 16- 3 overall and 6- 2 in Class 2A- 5, CMS falling to respective marks of 3- 13 and 0- 8.

Forcing seven first- quarter turnovers, Poyen jumped ahead 26- 1 and despite losing starting guard Ky Montino to a shoulder injury went up 35- 6 in the second period.

Lindy Shope’s three- point basket at 3: 52 activated a continuously running clock. It was 47- 11 after three quarters.

“It was good to get out on them early,” said Poyen coach Mickey Shaffer, a CMS graduate whose last of three state titles came at his current school ( the first two were at Caddo Hills). “We have not played too many games this season where we have just sort of taken control and played like I think we are capable of doing. We shot really well and we were able to turn them over with our man- to- man defense.

“And, you have to say they didn’t shoot well. If they shoot better early, it’s a much closer game. They didn’t shoot it well early, though, so it was a combination of all those factors.”

Montino, Emma Goodman and Kinzy Blacklock all scored eight points for Poyen. Shope totaling seven.

“Montino’s shoulder popped out of its socket,” Shaffer said. “The same thing happened in a game last week, but she didn’t even tell me about it. It did it again tonight. It went right back in, and if it would have been close I would have put her back into the game.

“She said it was fine and wanted to go back in. The game wasn’t close, though, so we decided not to risk things.”

Demi Bratton scored eight points and Tori Lantz four for CMS.
