Checks given to three different veteran groups
GREEENFIELD, N.Y. >> An annual Brookhaven Golf Club tournament held on Aug. 20 raised $6,600 to benefit local veterans programs.
Checks were presented Friday at Greenfield Town Hall to three different parties — the Guardian House women’s veterans homeless shelter in Ballston Spa, Saratoga County Veterans Service Agency’s Veterans Trust Fund, and the Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany.
The Veterans Service Agency assists more than 18,000 Saratoga County veterans each year. In 2011, the Board of Supervisors created a trust fund account to accept donations and make disbursements to veterans and veterans organizations in need of assistance. Trust fund money is used for things such as training, education, health care, housing assistance, and essential services, and to help groups that support veterans.
The VA Medical Center will use the money for its volunteer service program for veterans.
More than 120 people took part in the recent golf tournament, where fundraising included a raffle and silent auction of items donated by the community.
Brookhaven Golf Club is owned by the Town of Greenfield.
“I’d really like to thank the town and golf club pro, Kevin Canale, for their support of veterans,” said tourney organizer Ed Nanek, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. “The Town of Greenfield should be proud.”
