Finding balance in your life

- JOANN RYAN

On this beautiful day and others like it, there appears to be a sense of confidence among many that we are overcoming the seemingly insurmountable challenges of the last three months.

At the Chamber, we have tried not to skip a beat by rescheduling key events and continuing the committee meetings via zoom. We have added webinars to the agenda so that everyone is kept informed and up to date with the many changes occurring daily.

The Business Resource page on our website has information that includes material from all of our supportive partners including our U.S. Representatives and Senators, the Governor’s office, the Connecticut Department of Labor, Department of Economic Development, Small Business Association, SCORE, the City of Torrington, Northwest Regional Workforce Investment Board, Northwest Hills Council of Governments, and the Connecticut Business & Industry Association.

Chamber committees and peer groups have stepped up to the plate by scheduling very informative meetings with guest speakers. The attendees also give a personal update on their businesses, successes, and challenges. It is noteworthy that many have commented on the efficiency and ease of these zoom calls thanks to our zoom leaders.

As we move forward, still unable to host an in-person event, we prepared a survey that was sent to all Chamber members inquiring on their status as the state and more businesses re-open. If you would like to respond, please email me so that I can direct you to the survey. It takes seven minutes to complete and includes this information:

Type and size of business

Your business experiences and anxieties during the current situation

The expense of re-opening for you and/or your employees

The financial impact of COVID-19 on your business

Resources you will need going forward

Continuation of remote workforce

Attendance at meetings

and events in person

Webinar topics of interest to you

This quote from James Patterson in his book Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas helps put all that we are dealing with in perspective.

“Imagine life is a game in which you are juggling five balls. The balls are called work, family, health, friends, and integrity. And you’re keeping all of them in the air. But one day you finally come to understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back.

“The other four balls – family, health, friends, and integrity – are made of glass. If you drop one of these, it will be irrevocably scuffed, nicked, perhaps even shattered. And once you truly understand the lesson of the five balls, you will have the beginnings of balance in your life.”

Let’s all work together to achieve this balance.
