Town Republicans hold majority on election night
TORRINGTON — Republicans held their majority on the City Council and Board of Education in Tuesday’s elections.
According to Democratic Town Committee chairman Paul Summers, less than 30 percent of the city’s registered voters participated in the election this year.
“It’s a disappointing night for us, but I’m not disappointed with the candidates and the hard work they did,” Summers said, addressing his candidates at the party’s headquarters on Main Street Tuesday. “We’ve tried to make our city a better place, and we’ll continue to do that.”
Republican Dan Farley, who ran unopposed for a third term as city treasurer, said his party also worked hard and got the results they wanted in the election. Republican Town Committee chairman Tim Waldron said the wins were a result of an organized campaign. “We all worked extra hard this year as a group,” Waldron said.
“We went out and met with many homeowners, and that made a difference, because people got to meet us,” Farley said. “With Tim as our chairman, we were very successful.”
Summers reminded his fellow Democrats that this year’s election is a step toward 2021, when the mayor’s seat will be up for reelection. “All this leads to a mayoral race in 2021, and we’re searching for a candidate,” he said. “We want to get a Democrat in the mayor’s office in 2021.”
Democrat Sharon Waagner won a seat on the City Council with 1632 votes. “I want to thank all the voters who came out, and I appreciate the opportunity to serve,” she said. “I’ll do my best to represent the interests of all in our community. I’m disappointed that we couldn’t add another Democrat to the city council, but I’m proud of everyone who ran this year.”
The winners for City Council also include incumbent Democrat Paul Cavagnero and incumbent Republicans Ann Ruwet, Drake Waldron, Frank Rubino and David Oliver.
