UConn recruit Akok leaves Putnam Science Academy

Akok Akok has left Putnam Science Academy — though he has yet to inform his coach.

PSA coach Tom Espinosa said he had learned from two other people earlier in the week that Akok was leaving the school. He never heard from Akok and figured he’d see if the highlytouted, 6-foot-9 prospect showed up at practice on Saturday evening.

Akok never showed up, and his career at PSA is over.

“It’s time to move on,” Espinosa said by phone Saturday night. “It’s too bad. We’ve had him for 2 1/2 years. For him to go out like this is unfortunate.”

Espinosa had no idea what this means in terms of Akok’s recruitment. Akok has been a prime target for UConn, as well as Georgetown, Syracuse, Pittsburgh and Providence. He has also been weighing his options on whether to turn pro.

Espinosa said he has heard that Akok may be thinking of transferring to another prep school, like IMG Academy or Montverde Academy, both located in Florida. He has also heard Akok has considered enrolling early at a college, like former PSA star Hamidou Diallo did at Kentucky a couple of years ago. But the coach, who said he hasn’t spoken to the UConn coaching staff yet, simply has no idea what Akok’s plans are at this point.

But one thing is certain: Akok Akok will no longer be playing at Putnam Science Acadmey.

“I”m not surprised,” Espinosa added. “He’s never been the most bubbly, happy kid, but the past two months he hasn’t been very happy.”
