Abstract artist’s work on display at Loft Gallery

Pieces draw inspiration from children, sky

NEW PRESTON — The Loft Gallery at The Smithy will present Washington abstract artist, April Crumrine. April’s series of brightly colored paintings will be on view from April 12-May 20.

An artist’s reception will be held in the gallery on Saturday, April 14, from 4-6 p.m.

This free event is open to the community and gives guests an opportunity to meet the artist, chat with friends and fellow art enthusiasts and enjoy light fare, according to a release from the gallery.

When Crumrine walks into her studio, she turns up her inspirational music, starts to select color choices, and, using her deep connection to her four children, begins to build layers of color and shape on paper, according to the release.

Her “Wink” series features acrylic abstract pieces, each created with deliberate thought and meaning, the release stated.

With just a few chunks of bright color, some contrasting lines, and a few small simple, raw shapes, the pieces symbolize the artist’s connection to her children as they traveled around the world, according to the release. The artistic translations are gleaned from gazing at the night sky at the constellation Orion, the artist stated. She would wink at it, knowing that each of her children would look up to see the same stars in the sky from wherever they were at the time, according to the release.

The Loft Gallery is on the second floor of The Smithy Store, a renovated barn that once housed the village Smithy shop.

The Smithy Store is at 10 Main St. in New Preston.
