Jose may bring wind, rain

While no direct hit from Jose is expected in Connecticu­t, the National Weather Service has posted a tropical storm watch for the shoreline and southern part of the state.

The NWS said gusty winds, coastal flooding, moderate rain and power outages are possible as Jose moves south of southern New England.

“Hurricane Jose will track northward through the western Atlantic waters through midweek, passing to the southeast of the area late Tuesday night into Wednesday. The hurricane will be close enough to to bring potential impacts of tropical storm force winds, coastal flooding, and heavy rainfall.

“The best chance for tropical storm force winds and heavy rain will be across eastern Long Island and southeast Connecticu­t. Minor to moderate coastal flooding is also expected, with widespread water levels of 1 to 2 feet and locally up to 3 feet above ground level possible,” the NWS said.

Jose was a Category 1 hurricane with maximum winds at 85 mph on Monday. It is expected to be downgraded to a tropical storm as it moves into the cooler waters of the Northeast on Tuesday.

What areas are in the tropical storm watch?

Southern Fairfield and New Haven counties and all of New London and Middlesex counties.

When will we start to see effects ofthe storm?

As Jose nears, the chance of rain increases during the day on Tuesday. Heavier rain and gusty winds are possible Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

Conditions will improve by Wednesday afternoon, but it will remain breezy.

How strong will the wind be?

For interior Connecticu­t, including Danbury, New Milford and Torrington wind is expected between 16 to 20 mph.
