Donahue to interview scholar at museum

- By J. Timothy Quirk

Talk show icon will interview Yale professor Akhil Reed Amar about the importance of the Constitution.

WINSTED » Phil Donahue, nationally known for his Emmy Award-winning “The Phil Donahue Show” and an author and filmmaker, will use his interview skills when he visits the American Museum of Tort Law on Sunday afternoon. Donahue, known for his insightful questions and the ability to draw an audience into discussion, will interview Yale Professor Akhil Reed Amar about the importance of the Constitution, access to justice, and trial by jury.

The event will be held Sunday from 2-3:30 p.m. at the museum, located at 654 Main St. A meet and greet follows at the Winsted Community Bookstore at 5 p.m. Tickets are required for both events.

Not unlike “The Phil Donahue Show,” the program at the museum will be engaging and insightful and audience participation will be expected and encouraged.

Rick Newman, executive director of the museum, is excited about the program.

“The Constitution is the bedrock document which creates our governmental structure, and protects our rights,” Newman said. “This year, we are honored to be joined by broadcasting legend Phil Donahue, who will interview one of the nation’s foremost Constitutional scholars, Akhil Amar. The program will be fascinating, and best of all, the audience will be invited to participate. We look forward to seeing everyone there, but RSVP early — there are only a limited number of seats.”

The singularly impressive American Museum of Tort Law is the only museum of its kind, promulgating the importance of a fundamental legal right — to seek redress in court for wrongful injuries. Since opening two years ago, the museum has hosted many distinguished guests to the region including Jan Schlichtmann, who was the subject of the book and movie (starring John Travolta), “A Civil Action” starring John Travolta; Mitchell Garabedian, who took on the scandal in Boston involving the Catholic church that was the subject of the movie “Spotlight” as well as U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy; Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Matt Wuerker; famous illustrator Barry Blitt, who does so many New Yorker covers.

Now on September 17th, the broadcasting legend Phil Donahue will come to the museum to interview one of the nation’s foremost Constitutional scholars, Akhil Amar.

Tickets for Donahue’s program are $20 and may be reserved online at www. tortmuseum.org.

Following the program, a fundraiser will held at the Winsted Community Bookstore at 414 Main St., featuring a meet and greet with Donahue from 5-6:30 p.m. Tickets are $100 and include a year’s membership with the store’s book club, allowing a member to select 10 books of their choice.

The Winsted Community Bookstore provides services of a bookstore for a region of Connecticut that stems from Torrington to beyond the Massachusetts border. The newly formed bookstore has hosted many author talks and book signings since its inception earlier this year.
