Litchfield earns Tri-State tourney spot

LITCHFIELD » The Litchfield Cowboys joined eight other Tri-State Baseball teams qualifying for the league tournament’s second round beginning July 31 with a first-round series win over the Winsted Whalers Saturday afternoon.

In the second game of a best-of-three first-round series, Litchfield’s Justin Binkowski threw a complete-game 9-0 shutout.

Drew Gauvain and Stanley Rijo had two hits and two RBI for the Cowboys. BETHLEHEM PLOWBOYS 11, BRASS CITY BREW 7 » In the first game of their bestof-three first-round series against the Brew, the Plowboys came back from a 4-0 first-inning deficit with six runs, including 2-run homers by Mike Chiovitti and Kevin McDonnell. Jon Conlon added another home run in the sixth.

Pat O’Neill recorded the complete-game win. BETHLEHEM PLOWBOYS 10, BRASS CITY BREW 9 » The Plowboys came back from an even deeper hole Saturday than they did on Friday.

The Brew’s Paul Novakowski capped an eight-run third inning for Brass City with a bases-clearing double and a 9-1 lead.

Bethlehem came back with a five-run sixth inning, then made it over the hump in the seventh.

In that do-or-die inning, Tony Geraci hit a two-run single up the middle, 9-8.

With two outs, the Plowboys loaded the bases. Mike Milius drove in the tying run; Geraci raced home for the win on an error.
