GRANT COTTAGE: KneeHigh History, 10a.m. The Civil War years were more than soldiers at war. In song and story, program facilitato­rs Diana O’Brien and Tom Smith will remind us that there were heroes on the battlefiel­ds, cities, towns and villages who built upon the legacy left by our nation’s founders and who envisioned a country of freedom and opportunit­y for all. Designed specifical­ly for young learners ages 3-9, this program is the first in a series of three Civil War-themed programs for children. KINDNESS ROCK PROJECT: When Mrs. Nadine Scott, retired elementary teacher from Hoosick Falls Central School, was vacationin­g on Cape Code she found the Kindness Rocks Project, which she discovered is world wide. Now Mrs. Scott is bringing the project to Hoosick Falls. Come to the Cheney Library on August 22at 3p.m. and August 23at 4p.m to decorate rocks to place in the new Kindness Rocks garden. The rocks have already been painted with a base coat; all you’ll need to do is paint on a picture or a favorite saying with felt tip colored markers. SCARLET SEVEN GALLERY: In 1866an Ottoman diplomat commission­ed one of the most infamous paintings ever by French artist Gustav Courbet: “L’Origine du monde - (“The Origin of the World”). To this day, because of its very nature and realistic, graphic nudity, this painting has the power to shock and trigger censorship. It pushed the idea of what is erotic, sensual and romantic to what is pornograph­ic and unmoral. The new exhibition at Scarlet Seven Fine Arts Gallery in Troy brings together twenty-two artists with over sixty works or art, ranging from painting and drawing to photograph­y and sculpture, that explore the ideas of sexuality, sensualism, romance, humor and eroticism. GRANT COTTAGE: Explore the life of Frederick (Fred) Dent Grant, eldest son of Ulysses and Julia Grant, from childhood on a Missouri plantation to Civil War battlefiel­ds, West Point graduation and a career as U.S. diplomat and Major General. Like his father, Fred encountere­d hardships and scandals but displayed characteri­stic resolve to fulfill his duty through it all. When needed by his father in his final months, Fred faithfully and tirelessly served as the family’s spokesman and provided critical support to his mother and other family members following his father’s death. YADDO GARDEN TOURS: Yaddo Garden Tours will be held Saturday and Sunday from June 24-5through September 2-3, as well as Tuesdays during racing season. Tours of Garden only include sharing the history of the Trask Family, the Mansion and history of the Yaddo

gardens. The aura, spirituali­ty and creative energy that permeates Yaddo is discussed. Docent-led tours begin 11a.m. at the main fountain near the entrance gate to the garden. Tours last about one hour, for $10/ person. Special guided docent-led tours of the Yaddo gardens can be arranged at a date and time convenient for your group.
