Frieda Jane Hicks (Dilts), 91

Frieda Jane Hicks (Dilts) was called by her Heavenly Father on May 21, 2022 in Olean, New York at the age of 91 years old. She was born on Dec. 2, 1930 to Paul and Helen Dilts.

She was a beloved member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ellicottvi­lle, NY.

When you asked Frieda how she was doing, she always replied with a smile, “I’m doing good, for an old lady.” She was blessed to have been loved by so many friends and family.

Frieda was raised and went to school in Walston, Pennsylvan­ia, a small mining town near Punxsutawn­ey, PA. She was a graduate of Punxsutawn­ey High School class of 1949.

Frieda married Mark N. Hicks on July 26, 1953 at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Punxsutawn­ey. They had three daughters.

She moved to Salamanca, NY in 1957, where she raised her family and graduated from the State University of New York, Jamestown Community College in 1981. She also took classes at St. Bonaventur­e University. She worked for the Cattaraugu­s County Department of Social Services as a senior examiner before moving to Montana.

She moved to Billings, Montana in 1984 and worked for the State of Montana as a supervisor in the audit division of the Department of Health & Human Services until she retired. She spent much of her retirement ranching along the Yellowston­e River in Paradise Valley, Montana.

Frieda returned to Salamanca in 2010 and lived in Great Valley, NY until her death.

Frieda’s interests were traveling and horse racing. She had visited almost every horse racing track in the U.S. and Canada. She was also very involved in PTA, Salamanca Youth Group, and community activities while her family was growing up.

Surviving are: two daughters, Linda Adams, Chinook, MT, Susan Metzler (John), Salamanca, NY; three grandchild­ren, Robert Solberg (daughter Chanel), Helena, MT, Laura Metzler, Nunda, NY and Matthew Metzler, Philadelph­ia, PA; seven nieces and nephews, and several cousins.

She was predecease­d by daughter Karen Hicks, parents Paul and Helen Dilts, older sister Evelyn Barnoff, younger sister Janice Phillips, and a nephew, Ronald Barnoff.

A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. on June 25th, 2022 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ellicottvi­lle, NY.

Donations can be made to St. Paul’s, P.O. Box 656 Ellicottvi­lle, NY 14731. Money raised will be used to build an outdoor pavilion with access for persons with disabiliti­es. Frieda chose to donate her body to the University of Buffalo for Parkinson’s research.
